Youth Media Arts Project with Atelier Favela in Nicaragua

Atelier Favela in Nicaragua is a humanitarian organisation that supports the poverty-stricken children of Ticuantepe Nicaragua. Through lessons in Arts, Music, Dance, Theatre, Circus and Capoeira at our cultural centre we hope to stimulate personal development in our students. In this way these children can grow up to become independent adults with a future in the arts or whatever their passion may be.

nicaragua youth media arts project

Since the first of January my husband Joel and I, plus many other talented folks have been working with youth on a media arts project using video and art to explore concepts such as ‘Quien Soy’, or ‘Who I am’ and this week we are focusing on “Mi Communidad” or ‘My Community’. Students started the week off by creating a model of their community using trash, cardboard, leaves, branches and flowers from their ‘ambiente’ or environment. Today they will create maps of their community to share with their ‘video pals’ from Red Hook Art Project in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The Dare to Dream project created by teaching artists, Katy Walker & Joel Mejia also includes connecting non-profits with the hopes of fostering a long term connection where they share videos, letters and art with each other.

Here is the video featuring art, music, photos and videos by the youth of Ticuantepe, Nicaragua
